Linux 6.14 comes out today. What better way to celebrate than by doing a pacman -Syu
? Why, by deploying a new webpage as well!
It was about time this site fulfilled its promise of eventually being more than a plain, static HTML mourning my old webpage (or, rather, one of my old webpages. I had my fair share of them — I could count at least 4 off the top of my head. All of them were brought offline one by one by various mishaps; let’s hope this one won’t suffer the same fate…).
The idea came from my boss actually, who had the bright idea of setting up an internal blog/devlog of sorts, so we could keep track of our finished projects and get a sense of accomplishment (and, of course, show off to colleagues of other departments 😉). So shout out to András! 👏
And of course, this wouldn’t be possible by the author of this template, nicdun! 👑 Definitely check his stuff out!
Obviously, I’ll have to fill this blog with content. As you can read on the front page, it will be all sorts of technical, non-technical, artistic and entirely random musings, with a heavy focus on the Free, Libre and Open Source (FLOSS, OSHW etc.) movement, and especially the Linux ecosystem. At first I plan on posting an ensemble from the aforementioned intra-blog at work, about the stuff I did in the Linux kernel recently. Afterwards, I’m not sure. Probably will post about random personal projects and hobby stuff I do for/with friends. And knowing my attention span, will probably update this page very sporadically, disappearing for months, then mass-posting about the latest pet project I’ve been up to in that timeframe. Or maybe I’ll be so bored while commuting to work I’ll constantly write these articles, and have updates each month, who knows. So stay tuned!
So, to finish off this one where we started: it’s time for a new Linux release!
I’m not gonna list out all the new features, you can find that on all your usual tech news websites, like Phoronix, The Register, 9to5Linux, Kernel Newbies etc. I’ll just cherry-pick the changes that have involved me personally:
It seems that this release, albeit not a LTS itself (6.12 was already chosen as this year’s long-term kernel), will be the basis of Fedora 42 and Ubuntu LTS 25.04 (Plucky Puffin).
But as always, the linux kernel is never “complete”, there are still important patches that either didn’t make the cut yet, or will only debut in 6.15:
And lastly, you might have heard that upon the release of 6.13, Linus gave away some guitar pedals to five kernel developers: Bartosz “brgl” Golaszewski, Jeff Xie, Mathieu Desnoyers, John Hubbard and myself. The package got quite a bit delayed by the wonders of international posting (and especially the world-renowned incompetence of the Hungarian Post Office), but in the end the pedals got here in visually good condition. I’ll make another post once I got to sound them! 🎵
The release of Linux 6.14 was delayed by an evening, simply because Linus forgot to tag and push the release. Go figure. I guess even the big man makes mistakes.
